However, there is a projection that in the near future there will be a shortage of approximately 15,600 dental professionals in all the 50 states of the United States of America by 2025.This is based on the dental workforce data of 2012.

The states of California, Florida and New York are expected to experience the greatest shortfalls in the number of dentists in 2025, with 1,234, 1,152, and 1,024, respectively. So, by the year 2025, the supply of dentists is expected to grow by 20

DHPSA

Dental health professional shortage area (DHPSA) is a geographic area where there aren’t enough dentists to serve the dental needs of the people living there. The government is of the notion that any area with a population-to-provider ratio of more than 3,500 to 1 qualifies as an HPSA. When it comes to oral health, it is estimated that about 50 million Americans live in a Dental Health Professional Shortage Area. On an average, the nation’s 5,366 DHPSAs have just 39% of the number of dentists needed.

An additional of 7,712 dental health professionals would be needed in order to eliminate all of the United States’ DHPSAs. However, those numbers would only be sufficient if the dentists were spread out according to need.
In the 5,493 dental health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) nationwide, there are more than 5000 patients per dentist.

One dentist is needed for every 5,000 people. Moreover, the US shortage of dentists is estimated to be 7,300. The main challenge is that certain areas of the country are growing rapidly while there is a decline in population in other metropolitan areas.
