  Licensing Exam Format

All dental graduates who received their dental training outside Hong Kong are required to pass LE before they are qualified to be registered with the Council. There are two eligibility criteria for taking LE
1. At the time of the application, an applicant must satisfactorily complete, not less than 4 years full time dental training of a type approved by the Council.
2. The applicant must hold a dental degree or a dental qualification acceptable to the Council.

Total of three exams are conducted.

 Part 1 of LE

Part 1 is a written exam is MCQ based and has two papers. The exams are conducted twice/thrice a year and the dates are set a year in advance. Paper 1 of the written exam has three parts covering various subjects and each part has 20 questions and 20 minutes to complete. Paper 2 has five parts with each part containing 50 questions and one hour to complete. The written exams are conducted in two sessions. Paper 1 and Part A & B of Paper 2 are conducted in the morning while Part C, D & E of Paper 2 are conducted in the afternoon. The examination is to be written in Hong Kong.

 Part 2 of LE

Part 2 of the licensing exam is a practical test and is set to test the skills and competence of the candidate. The Part 2 test contains five parts of practical tests lasting an hour each and the tests may include oral examination. The sequence of the subjects will be disclosed prior to the commencement of the examination.

 Part 3 of LE

The Part 3 examination is a clinical test and is created to test a candidate’s ability to incorporate their knowledge in a clinical situation. The test is conducted in 3 parts: (1) Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, (2) Conservative Dentistry, Periodontology, Prosthodontics, and (3) Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The test may be accompanied by oral examination.
