NDEB- General Dentist Registration Process

The National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) is the organization responsible for establishing and maintaining a national standard of competence for dentists in Canada. Its mission is to serve the Canadian public, Dental Regulatory Authorities, and dental education institutions by ensuring a valid and reliable evaluation of competence for dentists in Canada.

Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge exam

The AFK is administered in two books which consist of 150 multiple-choice questions. Each book is given in a three hour session. The NDEB maintains a standardized passing score of 75 on all assessments and examinations.

Assessment of Clinical Judgement

The ACJ is a multiple choice style assessment which consists of three books administered in a single day. A test equated, re-scaled score of 75 or greater is reported as a Pass. You can take the ACJ for a maximum of three times.

Assessment of clinical skills

The ACS is a two-day assessment during which one perform a series of dental procedures on simulated patients (manikins) in a clinical setting. It is based on a grade system. You can take the ACS a maximum of three times.

The (DSCKE) Dental Specialty Core Knowledge Examination is administered in a three hour session. This examination contains multiple choice type questions with one or more correct answers. The DSCKE is an admission test used by Dental Specialty Assessment and Training Programs (DSATP). There is no defined passing score, but a score of less than 75 indicates you may have significant difficulty completing a DSATP.

The DSCKE is used by Canadian faculties of dentistry as part of the admission process for entry into Dental Specialty Assessment and Training Programs (DSATPs). The DSATP is commonly known as GAP training. It assesses a candidate’s didactic and clinical knowledge, skill and judgement in their specialty area and identifies the area(s) that require additional training. The required training to address knowledge and/or skill deficiencies must be completed in less than 12 months for a prospective applicant to be admitted to the DSATP.
